Respect Yourself, Don't Miss this Documentary

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the great accident that was Memphis' Soul imprint Stax Records. To help mark the occasion, last night PBS aired, as part of it's Great Performances series, the documentary Respect Yourself: The Stax Records Story, which followed the story of the small label that helped launch the careers of great soul artists like Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, Booker T. & the MG's, Rufus and Carla Thomas, the Staple Singers, Isaac Hayes and many more.

The documentary features classic performances from the late Otis Redding, along with clips of The Staple Sisters, Isaac Hayes, Sam and Dave, The Temptations and many more. It deftly moves through the history of music in Memphis and Stax's place in it, against the backdrop of the civil rights movement. With so much great music and rich background to cover, it almost moves by too quickly. If you missed, don't fret, most affiliates will re-air (just check local listings.)
