These are the times that try critics' souls. Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer made $57.4 million this weekend. I tried to warn you that even grading on the geek curve, there's nothing here worth your ten bucks. But would you listen? No. And now you're all pissed off, if the fanboys on the Rotten Tomatoes forums are anything to judge by (and I think they are):
Of course, there's also this thread: Critics are 100% wrong..., but the Cinematical fanboys are mostly down on the movie too.
Watch F4:RSS start sinking fast next weekend as the word spreads that even the fanboys are crying foul over this one.
No other film came close to the payday the top movie of the weekend earned, but Ocean's 13 hung on pretty solidly, dropping "only" 47 percent to take in $19.1 million; Knocked Up is still going strong at No. 3, earning $14.5 million, a drop of a much less worrisome 26 percent (if you're worried about box office); Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End was down 43 percent with a weekend take of $12 million. Surf's Up and Shrek the Third, at Nos. 5 and 6, were almost neck and neck with around $9 million apiece. Only the other major newcomer this week, Nancy Drew, is a real disappointment, debuting at No. 7 with a paltry $7.1 million. Poor Nancy: she'll do okay on DVD, but still ...
And you know, I love you all so much that I've seen and reviewed all of these movies. Because I want you to know what you're in for when you venture away from the computer this summer.
