Seattle International Film Festival Begins

On May 24, the Seattle International Film Festival launches its 33rd incarnation and we at Film.com will be there for all 25 days. The longest and one of the largest film festivals in the world, this year SIFF will be showing nearly 290 feature films (which includes 61 documentaries), as well as 117 short films.

The whole shebang will kick off with the Sundance hit Son of Rambow by Garth Jennings, the man behind the movie version of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Expect reviews of the movies and the parties in the coming weeks.

For those of you who are brave enough to explore on your own, you can find film and event descriptions at the official SIFF website. Along with being able to view the schedule on a day-by-day basis, those who want to skim through everything can click a link and see an alphabetical list of every film in the festival, along with brief descriptions. For a more opinionated look at the festival, the Seattle alternative weekly The Stranger has put out its SIFF Notes edition, which includes a blog element and 174 capsule reviews. The only drawback for those who only have online access is that it's much harder to browse; instead you have to pick and choose the capsules you want to read from a pull-down list of titles.

As you might expect for a festival of such massive size, it's hard to figure out what to focus on, from the archival films and silent films with live scores, to the midnight movies, to the more specialized environmentally-themed sidebar Planet Cinema and music-based sidebar Face the Music, to the experimental films in the Alternate Cinema sidebar, to the focus on German cinema. There's a lot going on here.

Suffice it to say, we'll be posting our reactions to all that we've seen and all who we’ve talked to throughout the festival.

Andy Spletzer is looking forward to meeting Sir Anthony Hopkins, who is driving up to Seattle with his wife to present his David Lynch-like experimental feature Slipstream.
