TiVo this! Can't-Miss Movies on TV

I scour the skeds so you don't have to, to find the hidden movie gems from all over the channelverse: from the HBO family of channels, Showtime and The Movie Channel, and Turner Classic Movies, which air films uncut and uninterrupted (and sometimes in letterbox). But ya gotta turn to The SciFi Channel once in a while, too, commercials and editing be damned -- there's nothing like geeking out in front of the tube with really bad movies featuring built-in breaks for munchie refills and snark attacks.

(All times are Eastern. Times between midnight and 5:59am actually refer to the previous date. In other words, 2am Saturday really means the overnight twilight zone between Saturday night and Sunday morning. Links in movie titles go to my review. Movies frequently air more than once over the course of the month, so if you miss something mentioned here, search listings for additional showings.)

THURSDAY 05.03

Turner Classic Movies 12:00m: The Quatermass Xperiment. Space fungus invades '50s Britain.

HBO 6:30AM: Battlefield Earth. Embrace the awfulness

Showtime 3:45AM: The Player. First thing we do, let's kill all the screenwriters.

FRIDAY 05.04

Turner Classic Movies 4:00AM: Mad Max. Oh no, they're still fighting over oil in the future.

Cinemax 7:00AM: Mean Streets. Scorsese! De Niro!

SATURDAY 05.05

Turner Classic Movies 8:00PM: The Producers. Springtime for Hitler and Germany, winter for Poland and France.

SUNDAY 05.06

Turner Classic Movies 3:00PM: The Hustler. Paul Newman plays pool.

Showtime 6:00PM: The Terminator. Starring the governor of California.

MONDAY 05.07

Turner Classic Movies 5:45PM: Meet John Doe. Politics was a disaster in the 1940s, too.

HBO Signature 4:30PM: The Hudsucker Proxy. Probably my favorite Coen Brothers' movie, and yours too, if you think about it.

TUESDAY 05.08

OuterMax 3:10AM: The Road Warrior. More Mad Max, less gasoline.

Showtime 5:30AM: Gamera: The Guardian of the Universe. We're in the hands of a giant turtle? That explains a lot, actually.

The Movie Channel 6:00AM: Brassed Off. Ewan McGregor plays a tuba, or one of those big loud brass instruments.

WEDNESDAY 05.09

Turner Classic Movies 10:00PM: Bringing Up Baby. Katharine Hepburn and a giant versus Cary Grant.

OuterMax 5:40AM: I Married a Strange Person! Surreal Bill Plympton animated horror.
