Trailer Parked: Apocalypto and Fur

Apocalypto Directed by: Mel Gibson Starring: Rudy Youngblood

Mel Gibson's Apocalypto looks brilliant. It is on my list for intriguing movies to see this year, but you have to assume that given the subject matter of the film (Mayans ... muy sexy!), the language barrier (subtitles - Jesus Christ = uphill battle) and Mel's recent stint on Celebrity Meltdowns, this film is going to have a hard time finding an audience. Considering the amount of work and attention to detail on display here, that's a shame. Even more so than the teaser trailer, this film seems to put you in a time and place, and I can't wait to get there. This trailer is cut to give you a sense of a violent and intense experience. Count me in.

Fur Directed by: Steven Shainberg Starring: Nicole Kidman, Robert Downey Jr., Ty Burrell

Fur gives the "imaginary portrait" of Diane Arbus, whom IMDB informed me is one of the world's most famed and respected photographers. The film stars Nicole Kidman as Arbus and Robert Downey Jr. as Lionel, an extraordinarily hairy dude Arbus ends up photographing (hence the title). The trailer is interesting but starts to lose me halfway through with shots like Kidman covered in (I assume) Downey Jr.'s hair. Way to make an audience stay away. I liked Shainberg's Secretary but this one looks more DVD rental-worthy than a must-see in the theatres.
