Being in a friends with benefits situation can sometimes be a predicament — and might even drive one participant in the unlabeled relationship to become a Catfish. And that’s exactly what unfolded during tonight’s brand-new episode featuring Brandon and “McKenna” — who was actually the 18-year-old’s on-again off-again hookup buddy Kharece.
But before we dive into the aforementioned complicated and all-too-common status among folks these days, let’s evaluate this MTV cyber tale. The construction worker contacted Nev and guest co-host Karrueche Tran because he believed he met the perfect girl — and even though Brandon and McKenna had only known each other for a few months (they struck up a conversation on Kik), they began exchanging “I love yous.”
However, when McKenna resisted talking on the phone or using videochat, the Washington native became a bit leery of this too-good-to-be true scenario. McKenna also claimed to live in Florida, so meeting in person was not an option. But odd circumstances aside, Brandon was grateful for McKenna because she helped him get over a previous relationship.
After Brandon gave Nev and Karrueche the lowdown, the two got down to business to try to learn the truth about McKenna. And it didn’t take too long: They realized that the photographs that were being used belonged to a girl who resided in Spain. But that wasn’t all: The phone number that Brendan had for McKenna was apparently generated in an app — so that meant the mystery girl didn’t necessarily live across the country.
“It could be somebody he knows,” Nev stated, in foreshadowing fashion.
When Nev and Karrueche gave Brendan the news about the fake images, he was visibly crushed. However, the trio had bigger issues: Phone calls to McKenna went unanswered. Desperate for more clues, Nev tried using a website that features a social media username database. With the help of this search engine, he found an active Twitter profile that was linked to the aforementioned Kik account. Cue opening a can of worms: On this feed, there was a screengrab from a Snapchat story which featured Brandon posing with a random girl.
Brandon quickly confirmed that the lady in this photo was his ex-girlfriend — and he was quite stunned about the connection between his ex and this Twitter profile. But some tweets about Harry Styles actually gave away that McKenna was actually Kharece (a die-hard 1D fan). Brendan elaborated that Kharece had been in love with him for a while, but he was quick to state that she was not his type. He also explained that she would show up unexpectedly at his house, and the last time they saw each other was the weekend prior. But that was only the tip of the iceberg.
“We had a friends with benefits type of thing here and there,” Brandon reluctantly admitted, further explaining that it occurred during high school. And the ex-girlfriend in the pic? That was Kharece’s best friend — and Brandon chose to be with her over Kharece.
Kharece — who Brandon texted to come over to his house — confirmed (without any hesitation) that she was in fact McKenna. Her reasoning behind this alter ego: She did not think that their communication would go this far, and she even insisted that she did not lie to him (besides the moniker and her hometown).
“Didn’t you fall in love with McKenna — who happens to be me?” Kharece asked.
“Yeah, but it’s YOU,” he replied.
But this is where this story and their previous friends with benefits history becomes tricky: Brandon and McKenna exchanged the L-word — but he thought he was telling it to McKenna. On the flip side, this reciprocated statement made Kharece hopeful for a real romantic future. While Brandon was every bit as emotionally invested as Kharece — and Kharece tried to stress that she and McKenna were closely correlated — his true feelings for Kharece made it impossible for him to be with the young woman behind McKenna.
