Zendaya Joins Sony And Marvel's 'Spider-Man' Reboot

Oh, snap! Zendaya just joined the MCU.

After months of speculation and rumors, Sony and Marvel announced their new Spider-Man, 19-year-old Tom Holland, in June of last year. Since then, however, all has been quiet on the Spidey front. That is, until now.

Variety reports that Disney Channel star Zendaya has landed a key role in Jon Watts's Spider-Man reboot, which means the teenage multi-hyphenate is official part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. [Commence celebratory dance party now.]

The teen webslinger will first make his MCU debut in an (unconfirmed) cameo in Captain America: Civil War, and then with his own solo movie in 2017 alongside Zendaya. Beyond the idea of introducing Spider-Man on screen for the third time, the film will finally bring the Marvel Comics favorite into the fabric of the mega-story started in Iron Man. So there's no telling what kind of impact Zendaya's character will have in Marvel's Phase 3.

Though her role is being kept under wraps, Deadline reports that she will play a character named Michelle. Whether she's the romantic lead opposite Holland's Peter Parker is still TBD, but last time we checked, Parker romanced Mary Jane and Gwen Stacy in the Marvel comics.

That being said, if Zendaya is playing Spidey's new girlfriend, we'd be all for it. After all, this is Peter's third big-screen origin story, so we'd appreciate it if Marvel and Sony mixed things up. Haters to the left.
