We all know Shawn Mendes as the record-breaking crooner behind hits like “Stitches,” as well as an emerging model and merciless Twitter tease. But it’s important to note that the 17-year-old also deserves some credit as a seemingly in-demand songwriter. Just ask two of his most sought-after pop contemporaries: Fifth Harmony’s Camila Cabello and One Direction’s Niall Horan.
As you’re probably aware, Shawn and Camila teamed up late last year for the stormy duet “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” which they wrote together at an impromptu backstage jam session. The high-drama single won over a lot of fans, but unfortunately, it also concerned many Fifth Harmony devotees who assumed Camila was abandoning the group. In a new interview with Seventeen, though, Camila addressed the backlash, saying her and Shawn’s song wasn’t a strategic or vindictive move of any sort.
“It's been so difficult to watch people criticize me and my intentions,” she told the mag. “It's been shitty. They turned me [doing the song] into a conspiracy theory. We literally just wrote a song backstage, and it ended up becoming something awesome. It wasn't a career move that I carefully planned out.
“Shawn and I are great friends," she continued. "That's why we write so well together — we have fun!”
Besides, Fifth Harmony are currently working on their sophomore album -- the follow-up to last year’s Reflection -- so there’s clearly no bad blood among Camila and her bandmates. That’s why it should also come as no concern that Shawn is now looking to write with 1D’s Niall while the band is on hiatus.
“I met him in America once and then he actually reached out to me over Twitter and so I got to talk to him a little bit,” Shawn told Capital FM about his conversation with Niall. “He seems really cool, really genuine.”
Shawn further revealed that Niall told him, “‘Give me a text if you're ever interested in writing or whatever.’ If we can figure out a time and place, definitely.”
If Shawn and Niall do team up together, then, remember this: Just like Camila isn’t abandoning 5H, Niall isn’t necessarily leaving 1D! We’ve already heard rumblings about some of his bandmates’ own solo projects, and if Niall chooses to forge his own path as well, more power to him. And with someone like Shawn working with him, it’d undoubtedly be a project worth getting excited for.
