One of the very best things about Zayn Malik’s newly-minted solo career — besides the #grown new music up his sleeve — is the influx of new interviews he’s doing. As one-fifth of One Direction, he tended to be “the quiet one” at press events, often overpowered by his sillier and more extroverted bandmates. But with his new solo interviews, we’re finally getting to see who Zayn really is. And thankfully, the dude has plenty to say.
During a new interview on L.A. radio show “Zach Sang and the Gang,” the 23-year-old discussed the meaning behind “Pillowtalk,” commented on 1D’s new “History” video and even addressed his (now totally official) relationship with Gigi Hadid. Here are the six most important things we learned:
“Pillowtalk” is a deeply personal song for him.Giphy
“Basically, I wrote that shortly after I left the band,” he said about the single. “We wrote that song around the time that I was feeling these emotions, shall we say, and I feel like that’s why it came out the way it did. I feel like in the vocal you can get a sense that I’m meaning what I’m saying.”
Zayn didn’t want to reveal too much about the song’s meaning, though, saying he wants fans to interpret it themselves. “I don’t want to be too specific about what it’s about,” he said. “That is obviously quite personal to me. People can figure it out for themselves.”
He wanted the “Pillowtalk” video to look like a “dream.”Giphy
“It was mostly all my idea,” he said about the inspiration behind the vid. “I just wanted it to be representational of the art that I’m looking at at the minute, even just from a perspective level. On the surface of it, I wanted it be arty and different and out there. That was the whole feel for the video; we wanted a kind of dream feel to it.”
He basically (finally) confirmed his relationship with Gigi.Giphy
When co-host Jill asked Zayn, “Was it cool to have your girlfriend in the video?” he responded, “Yeah, that was cool. It was something different. We enjoyed it, it was fun. Had a lot of fun on set.” Jill then pried a little further, asking, “No one easier to make out with than your own girlfriend, right?” Z replied, “Exactly. I like what you’ve done there.” Zing!
He thinks 1D’s “History” music video is “cool.”YouTube
“I’ve seen the music video, it’s cool. Yeah, it was cool,” he said. “I liked the fact they were nostalgic, shall we say, about the memories that we shared together. It was a positive thing. I enjoyed it, it was nice to look back at the memories that we shared together.”
It sounds like we’ll finally get to hear “Befour” soon.
Before “Pillowtalk,” the only sampling we’d gotten of Zayn’s solo music was a snippet of a song called “Befour” from a video accompanying his Fader magazine profile. Zayn brought up the track again in today’s interview while talking about recording outside of the studio, saying the song is “coming out soon.”
“You spend a lot of time in studios and being locked away inside rooms and not really getting a feel for what’s going on outside,” he said. “So we decided to mix it up and take the studio to different places. One of the songs on the album which will be coming out soon is a song called ‘Befour,’ and that song was inspired in Vegas and recorded there like three hours later.”
He was coy about his album release date, which just so happens to fall on the one-year anniversary of him leaving 1D.YouTube
Asked if it was a coincidence that Mind Of Mine drops on March 25, Zayn asked, “I don’t know, is that how it works out? Is that the date that it is? It’s March 25, it wasn’t planned that it worked that way. It just seems to coincide with the iTunes launch and everything. Maybe it’s a sign.” Maybe, indeed.
