Last week, Netflix confirmed its long-rumored “Gilmore Girls” revival by announcing a new four-part series hitting the streaming service this year. Naturally, everyone freaked the f—k out, especially after finding out many of the O.G. cast members were confirmed to return, including Lauren Graham (Lorelai), Alexis Bledel (Rory), Scott Patterson (Luke), Kelly Bishop (Emily), Sean Gunn (Kirk), and Keiko Agena (Lane).
Well, the past four days have certainly been a fun and great honeymoon period, but now a major bombshell has struck Stars Hollow: Melissa McCarthy says she won’t be reprising her role as bubbly chef Sookie St. James. And to make matters even worse, it’s because she supposedly wasn’t invited. Yikes.
On Tuesday afternoon, the actress responded to a fan’s tweet asking her to grace the reboot with her presence. “Thanks for the invite, but sadly no one asked me or Sookie to come back to Stars Hollow.,” she wrote. “Wish them all the best!!”
It’s long been rumored that McCarthy might not be able to squeeze the new series into her jam-packed schedule. Since her 2000-07 run on “Gilmore Girls,” she’s earned a name for herself as a big-screen leading lady in blockbusters like “Tammy,” “The Heat,” The Boss,” and the upcoming “Ghostbusters” reboot -- so it was definitely considered a stretch for her to return.
However, in a lengthy recent interview with TVLine, “Gilmore Girls” creator Amy Sherman-Palladino said she’s been in contact with McCarthy’s camp and was crossing her fingers for the actress to return to the set, if only for a small cameo.
“She’s really f--king busy,” Sherman Palladino said. “But the thing I have said [to her team] is, ‘Look, if Melissa is available and has an afternoon free, I’ll write her a scene. Melissa was one of us. If she has a spare moment to run over [to the set] — even if for just a cameo — we would be totally game. And if it’s a last-minute thing, I would write her in and we would figure it out. That’s the way we left it.”
The good news is, McCarthy sounds pretty bummed about not being asked back, and Sherman-Palladino said she definitely wants her Sookie back, so hopefully these two will get in touch and talk it out. And then McCarthy will say yes and we won't be smad anymore.
