We Finally Learn The Truth To Those David Bowie/‘Lord Of The Rings’ Rumors
Rumors of David Bowie's involvement with "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy have always just been whispers on the internet. That is, until recently. On Wednesday (Jan. 27), Dominic Monaghan, who played Meriadoc "Merry" Brandybuck in the "LOTR" series, set the record straight for everyone.
It turns out, Bowie really did audition for a role in the Peter Jackson-directed saga. While auditioning in London himself, Monaghan admits he saw Bowie at the casting agency office. After he did his audition, he was asked by John Hubbard, who was holding the audition, to hang back and wait for feedback.
Awesome, right? Monaghan just auditioned for a dream role in a sure-to-be blockbuster series and learned the audition "went really well." While awaiting feedback, Monaghan told The Huffington Post, "As I was reading a magazine waiting, David Bowie came in and signed his little list and went in. And I'm assuming he read for Gandalf. I can't think of anything else he would've read for."
According to rumors circulating the web, Bowie read for the part of Elrond, a role that eventually went to Hugo Weaving. "He may have read for something else, but I'm a huge David Bowie fan, and I was lucky enough to know his son now so just seeing him in person was pretty special to me," Monaghan added.
Supposedly, Jackson turned Bowie down for a role because the musician was simply too famous, although Jackson himself has yet to comment on the validity of this rumor.
