After 10 years, the “High School Musical” cast is still all in this together. Well, almost.
Original cast members Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Tisdale, Corbin Bleu, Monique Coleman and Lucas Grabeel headed back to East High over the weekend to reflect on the movie for a 10th anniversary special airing later this week.
Besides teasing their reunion in the video above, the cast also shared a ton of cute messages and behind-the-scenes pics with one another.
Notably absent from the festivities was Zac Efron, a.k.a. Troy Bolton himself, who reportedly missed the reunion because it conflicted with promotion for his upcoming comedy “Dirty Grandpa.” Efron will, however, appear in a pre-taped message to fans (but if he’s not wearing his No. 14 Wildcats jersey, I’m demanding a reshoot).
“High School Musical” debuted on Disney Channel on Jan. 20, 2006, introducing a then-record audience of 7.7 million viewers to Troy Bolton and Gabriela Montez’s epic love saga. They challenged the status quo, broke free from their respective cliques and started something new together in the name of music (how many song references did you get there?). The movie spawned a best-selling soundtrack, two additional films, an arena concert tour and even “High School Musical: The Ice Tour.”
“Seeing the cast of High School Musical back together again reaffirms what made it special 10 years ago,” Gary Marsh, Disney Channels Worldwide president and chief creative officer, said in a statement. “Ten years later, the movie continues to delight audiences around the globe, not just for its memorable song and dance numbers, but for its universal themes that continue to resonate with fans everywhere — express yourself, believe in yourself, and always follow your dreams.”
To that end, let’s all remind ourselves of the pure magic of “Breaking Free,” shall we?
