Madlib and Freddie Gibbs Team Up for Ferocious New Track "City"

Madllib Freddie Gibbs

Last month, Freddie Gibbs promised Hive that his upcoming Piñata collaboration (formerly called Cocaine Piñata as Pitchfork notes) with Madlib is going to be "a special project that’s definitely going to show you my versatility and who the best spitter is." Today Gangsta Gibbs has granted the world (via Rolling Stone) a sneak peak into the direction that the enterprise might be heading by dropping the song "City" featuring 'Lib and Karriem Riggins. Released part of the Adult Swim Singles Series, the track showcases Gibbs' always ferocious flow over a rambunctious and busy production that fuses slinky drum patterns with stabs of noise fuzz. Asserting his staunch independent streak, Gibbs chides critics in verse as he vents at those "comparing me to these rappers -- you must be playing."

In related Piñata news, a list of confirmed co-conspirators for the project has been released. The roster includes Danny Brown, Raekwon, Earl Sweatshirt, Mac Miller, Ab-Soul, Casey Veggies and Domo Genesis, plus the Beast Coast kiddies Joey Bada$$ and Meechy Darko of the Flatbush Zombies. Expect vocal fireworks to ensue.
