Chris and Steve Martinez, otherwise known as the Martinez Brothers, are at the forefront of a soul-house revival. (You might recall them from this Blackberry commercial.) Raised on classic house by their father in the Bronx, the two brothers got their break playing New York City deep-house monument Shelter when younger brother Chris was only 14 years old. Resident DJ Thomas Regisford took the duo under his wing, and Shelter became an ad-hoc classroom for them to study dance music closely. Fast-forward a few years, and the Martinez Brothers were getting booked to play their unique brand of techno-disco and classic soul at clubs all across the world.
Eventually, the brothers nailed a summer residency at Ibiza club DC10 in 2012 and were invited back again this year. Recorded on June 3rd at DC10 party Circoloco, the mix below is one of Chris and Steve’s first sets of the 2013 Ibiza summer party season. “It’s very spontaneous, nothing planned,” they tell Hive. “We literally got there five minutes after our set was supposed to start from our previous gig so our mentality was to go in and destroy the place.” From start to finish, Chris and Steven mix absorbing four-on-the-floor dance gems that match seductive synths with addictive percussion lines. "We played after Willi Graff and right before Dan Ghenacia. There is never a dull moment at DC10. Literally hands in the air the whole night.” Stream their Circoloco set below.
