Toronto producer Aaron Bird realized a life-long dream when recording "Still Shine," the brassy, inspiring second track on his upcoming La Notte album. In addition to featuring fellow T.Dot representatives Notes to Self, the track boasts guest vocals from the now-defunct trio Little Brother. As Bird tells it, the seed for the collaboration was planted 10 years ago when he wrote a letter to producer 9th Wonder just after the trio dropped the modern classic The Listening. Bird caught up with LB whenever they performed in Toronto and arrived "armed with the best tactic I had at the time."
Bird was referring to a beat CD that "they couldn't resist listening to" thanks to the hand-drawn artwork depicting each member of the group. "They would laugh instantly," he said, adding that "it was genuine laughter, with a bit of a shock." But once he had them laughing, he knew they'd listen to the CD. Bird was right. When he reached out to snag Rapper Big Pooh and Phonte for some back-and-forth bars on "Still Shine," they were happy to oblige. Now if only this didn't make us realize that the world could use another Little Brother album, but that's a different story altogether.
La Notte is due out July 9 on Lost Metropolis Records. Stream "Still Shine" below:
