Hive Five: Our Daily Listicle of Musical Musings
This week, Harlem's new rap prince A$AP Rocky will see his long-awaited studio debut Long.Live.A$AP hit the streets. But as the project leaked back before Christmas, the Internet's underground have already been beavering away on their own remixes of its songs. Here's five of the best to swag out to, A$AP style.
1. "Fuckin' Problems" (Zazu's Trap Remix)
In its original guise "Fuckin' Problems" holds down a fiery mid-point spot on Long.Live.A$AP. But for the Zazu Trap Remix the track heads off in a swaggering new direction, complete with extra vicious synth attacks.
2. "1 Train" (DJ Sega Remix)
With a bursting line-up of guest rappers that includes Action Bronson, Kendrick Lamar, Joey Bada$$, Big K.R.I.T., Yelawolf and Danny Brown, the album take of "1 Train" comes off like an extended radio freestyle session. Cheekily then, DJ Sega ditches all but one snippet of the vocals and transforms the song into a frenzied dance-floor work-out.
3. "Long Live A$AP" (DrugWave Remix)
High on the haunting atmospherics tip, the DrugWave flip of Rocky's album opener sounds like it was re-recorded in an eerie warehouse, complete with dubby snare effects.
4. "Fashion Killa" (Dr. Gasmo Remix)
In Dr. Gasmo's hands Rocky's flossy fashion-forward jaunt becomes a straight-up instrumental dance track. Don't scuff those Balenciagas!
5. "Phoenix" (Screwed & Chopped by JayStylo)
The Dangermouse-crafted "Phoenix" is one of the album's moodiest moments -- which makes it fine fodder for entering the realm of slowed-down screw music. Watch out for Rocky's already pitched-down vocals at the end of the song turning ultra-deep!
