"I don't care if I get kicked out of every rich kid club on the planet ... I will never sacrifice my integrity as a DJ ... ever," DJ Shadow tweeted after being asked to cut his set short last month, after only half an hour at Miami's Mansion club. Apparently, the promoters decided the songs he was spinning were (in Shadow's words) "too future." Miami meatheads' loss is the rest of the world's gain though, as this week Shadow uploaded a version of his All Basses Covered set to SoundCloud for discerning low-end theorists to genuflect over.
Kickstarting with a coy vocal sample that includes the sentiment "If you're not satisfied with my best then that's too fuckin' bad," the 86-minute mix soon swanks into effect and grandiosely passes through trap, dubstep and drum 'n' bass segments. Meticulously stitched together as usual, Shadow also weaves in humorous touches that nod to the Simpsons theme song and "La Bamba," plus a natty nab from Fleetwood Mac's "The Chain." Consider it the modern bass that ate Miami.
