The Mad Decent Block Party originated casually in 2008, and it was held on the street outside the Philly label's headquarters with "a $30 permit and 1000 people." It's still open to the public (or those who RSVP, anyway), but the days of inner-city neighbors casually wandering in are long gone. The Mad Decent Block party circa 2012 is a five-city, sponsored festival, the official preview video for which, features Diplo flying a helicopter.
Yesterday, at Williamsburg Park in Brooklyn, the lineup offered almost ten hours of live music, or it would have, if a violent storm hadn't forced premature evacuation of the venue right before Major Lazer's headlining set. Nonetheless, nearly eight hours of partying did go down, with Erol Alkan, Bonde Do Rolê, Lunice, Riff Raff, Mr. Muthafuckin' eXquire, Reptar, Zebra Katz, Bosco Delrey, Baauer, Kito, and Paul Devro getting in their stage time before the storm. Alas, while browsing Diplo's Instagram stream this morning, Hive learned that Major Lazer ended up playing a two-hour set later at the nearby Music Hall of Williamsburg, at the official Block Party after-party.
Check out our exclusive pics of all the characters, including Riff Raff (repeatedly, frequently) flashing his chains alongside a dancing taco, Brazilians Bonde Do Role wearing parrot pants and getting interactive with a milk-squirting penis gun (NSFW), Mr. Muthafuckin Exquire hanging with the crowd in his trademark fur hat (despite the intense heat), and, of course, the label honcho himself, Diplo, giddily weathering the storm.
