Early this morning, MTV.com released the full list of nominees for the 29th Annual Video Music Awards. The show will be airing live September 6th from the Staples Center in Los Angeles at 8 p.m. ET, meaning fans have little over a month to vote for their favorite videos in their respective categories. Performances from four-time VMA-veteran Alicia Keys and breakout tween heart-stealers One Direction are already slotted for the evening.
Hive’s favorite Odd Future crooner Frank Ocean was nominated in three categories for nostalgia/ULTRA’s “Swim Good,” including Best New Artist and Best Male Video.
M.I.A is looking at three nominations, too. Though we're not that keen on “Bad Girls," its video is the most breathtakingly bold in the field. Appropriately, “Bad Girls” is nominated for Best Cinematography and Best Direction, and also received a coveted Best New Video nod.
First-time nominee A$AP Rocky looks to pull his first gold moonman for “Goldie" -- he's nominated for Best Editing. In the past year he’s revitalized the notion of hustler-branded hip-hop, but he's an underdog in a category that includes Beyoncé, the Throne, Gotye and the cast of G.O.O.D. music.
And while the on-screen chemistry between A$AP Rocky and Lana Del Rey was seductive, it’s the tatted Bradley Soileau who works the leading man role in “Born to Die,” which is nominated for Best Art Direction and Best Cinematography. If there was an award for Tenderest On-Screen Hug, Lana and Brad would be shoe-in winners. Maybe next year.
