Five Zooey Deschanel iPhone Commercial Parodies

Hive Five: Our daily listicle of musical musings.

From her cuddly-hipster-next-door star turn in Fox’s New Girl series to her indie-folk duo She & Him with M. Ward playing Sonny to her winsome Cher, Zooey Deschanel is the quaintly eccentric, ukulele-strumming, vintage clothing addict America loves to hate, or hates to love, depending on your perspective. But the craftily calculated cocoon of cuteness surrounding the saucer-eyed, kittenish actress/singer definitively turned the corner toward Insufferable Ave. with her recent iPhone commercial, in which the 32-year-old pixie prances pajama-clad around her apartment on a rainy day, engaged in a cloyingly quirky dialogue with her digital handmaiden Siri. The spot ends with Deschanel awkwardly dancing to Big Joe Turner’s 1954 rock & roll milestone “Shake, Rattle and Roll,” and in the space of 30 scant seconds, the seemingly agoraphobic sprite quickly comes to embody Turner’s lyric, “You make me roll my eyes, baby you make me grit my teeth.” Over the last few weeks, the commercial has inspired a mini-meme, as a wave of parodies has flooded YouTube and the blogosphere. But it’s a world that’s not safe to wander alone, as you might be waylaid at any moment by a bangs-bedecked waif brandishing an antique andiron at you, so here’s a handy guide to the best of the bunch.

1. Siri & Zooey: The Conversation Continues

Rex writer/director Stephanie Bencin is the relative o.g. of this micro-genre, having debuted her clip weeks before the rest, and imagining an equally maddening sequel instead of just overdubbing wisecracks on the original clip. Zooey: Siri, are you my best friend? (long pause) Siri: You were good in Elf.
