If you were already stoked about the Flaming Lips’ upcoming monster Record Store day collaboration album, The Flaming Lips and Heady Fwends, you better hold onto your skulls (human or gummy): A few editions of the must-have item will contain samples of blood from the band’s illustrious collaborators.
“What I’m going to try to do — and I’m collecting stuff for it as we speak — is I’m going to try to make a record that has every person’s blood in the record,” Lips mastermind Wayne Coyne tells Hive. “I don’t have everybody’s blood just yet, but I collected quite a few vials of blood and it’s actually sitting in my refrigerator as we speak.”
According to Coyne, the record will come in picture disk form. “I’m going to try to take that same concept and put little bits of everybody’s blood in the middle of this record. Like a glass specimen thing.” Five or six will be made and will likely be sold to, as Coyne calls them, “Interested rich Flaming Lips people.”
Coyne declined to tell us just whose blood he has collected so far, but assures us that he has “… Some really fucking good ones.” Also, he told us Bon Iver and Ke$ha were his two favorite collaborators, so there’s that for a hint.
“You don’t really realize how many people are afraid of needles until you say, ’Hey, I’m going to send someone by the show tonight to get some of your blood,'” Coyne says, adding that he was a bit surprised since some of the donors have tattoos (hint number two).
We’re sure that he’ll give us more details as the blood continues to flow. In the meantime, check out the list of collaborators and starting lobbing guesses into the comments below. Coyne plans to continue collaborating with new artists as well, so it’s likely even more bands will pour their blood (literally?) into a new Lips song.
“Even over the weekend I ran into Diplo and the TV On The Radio guys again,” he says. “Even that weirdo guy from the — the laughing my fucking ass off dude. You just run into people and you’re like, ’We should do stuff.'”
The Flaming Lips and Heady Fwends drops in vinyl form on Record Store Day, April 21. Coyne tells us it should be coming to iTunes and other outlets soon after.
