The influences of Kris “Karizma” Klayton’s hometown of Baltimore has a lot to do with why he’s such a great DJ. The house producer started as a teenager, working the city’s local club circuit and contributing to the growth of the area’s rising Baltimore Club movement. He soon shifted away from the raw aggression of club to experiment with the genre’s overlap with house. He maintained the same dance floor catharsis, adding heavy samples, soulful house hooks, hip-hop breaks and catchy up-tempo drum programming to his own productions. Between his work with house icons [i.e. Kenny Dope, Basement Boys, and Dennis Ferrer] and his own aliases [K2, KaytroniK, Kohesive], he’s now responsible for close to thirty releases on legendary labels R2, Objectivity, Strictly Rhythm and Defected.
Karizma’s FACT Mix is a perfect example of the DJ’s versatility. During this hour-long mix, he maintains a steady groove while touching on elements of soul, hip-hop, club and house. It’s a seamless effort too: a collection of banging club productions [a remix of “Brighter Days” and his own “To the Ryvuum”] mix with the loungey down-tempo vibes of the Lovesoul remix of Muthafunkas “Oh I Miss You.” Some of the more subtle highlights are hints of his past in Baltimore Club — his edits of Common’s “Come Closer” and “Brighter Days” both swell into a momentarily powerful stomp before tapering down and into the next track.
It’s not too often that we get to hear a curated mix from the DJ these days — he’s too busy touring Indonesia and the like — so take a listen while you still can. The mix is only live for the next two weeks. [Stream/Download Karizma’s FACT Mix here.]
