At this time last year, much of the non-rap-fan public, particularly those in their 20s and younger, likely had little idea who N.W.A was. In 2015, thanks largely to the group's biopic, "Straight Outta Compton" -- and belatedly scoring their first top 40 hit on Billboard -- that changed.

Now, their resurgent run is set to continue, as they're headed to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The legendary rap crew will be inducted on Apr. 8, 2016, according to USA Today.

The honor, chosen by both fans and voters of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation, comes after four years of eligibility, and the crew will become just the fifth hip-hop act to be enshrined in Cleveland, joining Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five (2007), Run-D.M.C. (2009), Beastie Boys (2012) and Public Enemy (2013).

"It's hard to sum up exactly what it means," Ice Cube told Rolling Stone. "It means a lot of things. It means that the group's mark is kind of solidified. It's all legitimized in a way because the whole music industry has to honor the group in a way. It's just hard to sum up in words, really.

"It's everything that kind of eluded us in a lot of ways when we were coming up," he said, referencing the success of the year in general. "So many people were opinionated about N.W.A. I think everyone now at this point, no matter how you feel about us, understands what the group actually did and what it means to modern music. I think the movie helped to get people to remember that."

In addition to N.W.A, Deep Purple, Chicago, Cheap Trick and Steve Miller will also be inducted.
