Metallica frontman James Hetfield’s contribution to the year-end cluster is his “Top 10 Thingz of 2015,” posted on the band’s official website. Among his highlights are meeting Led Zeppelin’s Robert Plant, watching his children grow up, raging with fans onstage, and the ever-important “Still Alive!!!”
But it’s his 10th and final pick that’s most noteworthy: “Justin Bieber wearing a Metallica T-shirt!”
As you may recall, the pop prince caused a wholly ridiculous stir when he wore a Metallica shirt during an appearance on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” and when he posed for a slick pic on Instagram.
Some metalhead haters were displeased with JB’s style choice and immediately questioned his legitimacy as a fan — something that we’ve pointed out is completely unfair. Besides, Bieber and Metallica have a storied history of supporting one another. In 2012, Bieber told GQ that “Fade to Black” and “One” were his “jams.” The following year, Hetfield told Q magazine, “Are we Beliebers? Yes,” while drummer Lars Ulrich explained, “I think the kid's really talented and obviously to go through what he's going through at that early age must be a mindf—k. So the fact that he still goes out there and does it, I admire that and I think he's super talented, so I guess I am kind of a Belieber.”
Anyway, another achievement to make Hetfield’s year-end list is “getting best guitar sound yet recording new album @ HQ.” Indeed, the band has been teasing its forthcoming 10th studio album, which is expected to release next year. Maybe Metallica fans should focus their energy on that instead of Justin Bieber’s fashion? Just a thought.
