Get in the habit of getting out of your old ones.

Leaving something cozy is hard. We're all brutally reminded of this every morning when our alarms go off. Hitting the snooze button is tempting -- both in bed and in life. Stepping out of your comfort zone, though, is necessary and healthy.

Studies have shown that doing things outside of your "norm" increases everything from your focus to your ability to handle life's unexpected setbacks. Feel like you're in a rut and not sure how to ease your way out of it? Try some of these simple tricks to get you started on your journey.

Wear a loud outfit

Embrace sequins. Finally wear that neon dress that's been in the back of the closet. For one night, be OK with people coming up to talk to you because of what you're wearing.

Go to dinner alone

Boldly tell the hostess you're a party of one and realize that you actually make an amazing date.

Perform at an open mic night

Have some poetry you've written that's never seen the light of day? Can you secretly play the guitar? Face your stage fright dead on and maybe discover a cool new coffee shop in the process.

Chop your hair off

It. Will. Grow back.

Initiate a conversation with a stranger

Ask the person next to you on the bus where they grew up, or strike up a convo with the guy in line behind you at the drug store. You'll gain more confidence in your social interactions. You might even get a story out of it.

Take a different mode of transportation to work or school

If you generally drive everywhere, spend one day using buses and trains to get around. You'll be forced to take a fresh perspective on something that has become routine to you. You'll also probably get some solid people-watching in.

Ask for someone's phone number

Spot a cutie at the mall? Stop window shopping, take a breath and go ask for their number. The worst that can happen is they say no. (And you'll have an excuse to splurge on those shoes you've been eyeing.)

Eat a food you don't like

If it's been 15 years since you had asparagus, challenge the notion that you don't like it. This will get you in the habit of questioning your own beliefs about yourself. Also, asparagus tastes awesome with bacon, so there's that.

Go out for the night without your phone

Gasp! Force yourself to find something to look at while you're out and about. Get yourself home using only your directional sense! Live to tell the tale! ?
