Justin Bieber And The Grammys -- Is This His Second Chance?

His 'Where Are Ü Now' nom with Jack Ü may be the in he needs.

Justin Bieber and the Grammys have the kind of relationship that you and that girl you met at college freshman orientation have. You might've clicked right away, but you found out you had nothing in common and now you don't even acknowledge each other in the library. So is it weird if you go to one of her house parties as a senior?

The Biebs and the Grams might have a second shot at making it work, after it was announced on Monday (Dec. 7) that he is nominated for Best Dance Recording for the Jack Ü track "Where Are Ü Now" with Skrillex and Diplo. Hooray! Although, it's always been kind of awkward between these two.

It seems like an epoch since Bieber was nominated for Best New Artist, but it was actually 2011, when the teen sensation was up against Drake, Florence + The Machine, Mumford & Sons and Esperanza Spalding. His My World 2.0 was up for Best Pop Vocal Album, too, and many were confident that he would take away something -- after all, not only was he winning over the hearts of young fans, who boosted his Twitter following to 6 million followers in 2010, but he was a household name.

But Esperanza Spalding took home the award for Best New Artist, and well, Bieber was "disappointed," as he told MTV News backstage:

He vowed to come back next year, but in 2012, he only had his Christmas album to show for. At the 2013 Grammys, there was no love for Bieber’s next album, Believe. His manager, Scooter Braun, said the Recording Academy “blew it” by not nominating him, and of course, Beliebers agreed. After all, he was one of the biggest-selling artists at the time, and the Academy looked the other way.

That year Bieber held a rival live stream during the Grammy broadcast (which didn't really work out because it kept crashing) and gave fans a partially finished track.

In 2014, his Journals project wasn't nominated because it wasn't labeled as an official album release. My guess is that Bieber didn't care about winning a Grammy that year, even though, deep down, he's still eyeing for one. Journals was simply for the fans, and who cares what a bunch of old white dudes think, right?

There was nothing to show for the 2015 Grammys either, and as I predicted last year, the 2016 Grammys were going to be Bieber's jam.

OK, so Purpose didn't come out until Nov. 13 this year, which didn't make the Grammys' Sept. 30 eligibility cut-off, but his collaboration with the Jack Ü producers was released back in March and has been seen as Bieber's comeback track. And with one eligible track getting nominated, I'd say that's a pretty good record so far.

Also nominated in the Best Dance Recording category is Above & Beyond feat. Zoë Johnston - "We're All Be Need," The Chemical Brothers - "Go," Flying Lotus feat. Kendrick Lamar - "Never Catch Me" and Galantis - "Runaway (U & I)." All of these tracks are excellent, but you have to admit, Bieber and Jack Ü have a pretty sweet shot at this thing. "Where Are Ü Now" is a monster track that gave a teen idol a second chance and a new voice, transforming him from bad guy to the sympathetic dude with music that's cool to like again.

To me, it makes sense that Bieber is invited back to the Grammys. So, the question is... will Bieber come to the party?
