President Called For Ban On No-Fly List Gun Purchases

In a rare prime time address, President Obama referred to last week's attack in San Bernardino as an "act of terrorism" and urged Congress to ban people on the no-fly list from buying guns, while also pushing for new restrictions on assault weapons. Obama urged the public to avoid engaging in Islamophobia and turning "against one another" and said the U.S. is equipped to handle the "evolving" threat of terrorism. The comments drew sharp rebuke from leading GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump, who fired off a series of tweets that read, in part, "Is that all there is? We need a new President - FAST!" and, "Hope he won't spend to much time ripping apart the 2nd. Amendment!"

Florida Sen. Marco Rubio told Fox News afterwards that Obama was "completely overwhelmed" by terrorism and said there was no evidence of "widespread discrimination against Muslims," adding "the notion that a radical jihadist who is on a no-fly list is going to walk into a local gun shop to purchase a gun is absurd." Ben Carson said the speech was "strange" and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz said if he's elected he will "destroy ISIS" and shut down the "broken" immigration system letting jihadists into the country. The Republican majority in Congress refused last week to consider new gun legislation.

The Justice Dept. Will Investigate Laquan McDonald Death, Ahmed Mohamed Case

The Justice Dept. is expected to announce an investigation into the "patterns and practices" of the Chicago Police dept. in the wake of the release of a video showing officers shooting black teen Laquan McDonald. Officer Jason Van Dyke has been charged with first-degree murder in 17-year-old McDonald's death. The civil probe will be similar to ones launched in Ferguson, Missouri, and Baltimore and will join a parallel probe into the shooting itself. Also, the Justice Dept. is looking into whether 14-year-old Ahmed Mohamed's civil rights were violated when school officials had him arrested for bringing his homemade clock to school.

Liberty University Preisdent Urges Students To Arm Themselves

At the school's convocation on Friday, Liberty University president Jerry Falwell Jr. suggested students get guns to arm themselves against the threat of Muslim terrorists. "If some of those people in that community center had what I have in my back pocket right now … Is it illegal to pull it out? I don’t know," said the leader of the Christian school that is often a campaign stop for conservative presidential candidates. "I’ve always thought that if more good people had concealed-carry permits, then we could end those Muslims before they walked in ... and killed them." Falwell later said he was carrying a .25 pistol during the address and that he was referring to Islamic terrorists when he said "those Muslims."

Quick Take: Two University of Rochester students who were allegedly abducted late Saturday night and held hostage were found on Sunday night and four people were taken into custody and could be charged with kidnapping and assault. The seniors, Nicholas Kollias and Ani Okeke Ewo, were reportedly held against their will and one was recovering from a gunshot wound to the leg received before the rescue operation was undertaken by a SWAT team.

Update -- Pres. Carter Cancer-Free: Former President Jimmy Carter, 91, told his congregation at Plains, Georgia's Marantha Baptist Church on Sunday that his cancer is gone. According to reports, Carter shared the news during a Sunday school class that he teaches, when he said, "he got a scan this week and the cancer was gone... The church, everybody here, just erupted in applause." Carter announced in August that his melanoma had spread to his liver and brain.

U2 Take Paris: After postponing their live Paris show in the wake of the Nov. 13 terror attacks, U2 took the stage at the AccorHotels Arena on Sunday night just miles from the scene of the worst killings -- the 89 murders at the Bataclan theater -- and performed an emotional show for the sold-out crowd of 17,000. "Tonight we are all Parisian," singer Bono said in French. "If you love liberty, then Paris is your hometown." The show included a scrolling of the names of the victims and a guest appearance from punk icon Patti Smith.
