NYCC 2013: The Top Ten Comic Panels You Should See

With Marvel and DC (and largely Image as well) sitting out this year’s New York Comic-Con, this is your chance to see some of the other publishers shine during one of the East Coast’s biggest shows.

After the jump, we’ve got our recommendations for panels you should definitely check out, packed to the brim with creators and announcements.

10. Archie Comics: Zombies, Heroes, Cartoons, Movies and more!
When: Saturday, 3:00-4:00
Where: 1A15

The Archie line certainly has become more and more eclectic over the years, adding superheroes and horror comics alongside the adventures of perpetual teen Archie. At this point, the question is what strange, new curve ball they’ll throw their readers.

Archie Comics is having its biggest year to date: launching its first full-fledged horror series, kicking its superhero line into high gear, plus the announcement of a live action Archie movie! The Archie crew invites you to be the first to witness what surprises (and zombies!) are in store for the future of the iconic teens of Riverdale! The panel includes Archie Comics Publisher/Co-CEO Jon Goldwater, President Mike Pellerito, cartoonist Dan Parent (Kevin Keller), iVerse Media CEO Michael Murphey, Gogii Games President George Donovan and will be moderated by the writer of the Archie movie Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (Afterlife with Archie). Come prepared with questions to find out about Afterlife with Archie, the Archie mobile game, the Archie movie plus learn more about the future of the critically hailed Red Circle superhero comics New Crusaders and The Fox! 9. Celebrating 36 Years of Judge Dredd, Sláine and 2000 AD!

The 2000AD line seems to have been invigorated by the digital revolution and remains a great launchpad for new comics talent. While this panel will focus on existing creators, it’s certain to be interesting.

From the hardcore world of Judge Dredd to the warp-spasming Celtic barbarian Sláine and future war series Rogue Trooper, legendary comic 2000 AD has brought us some of comics’ most memorable characters – join staff plus creators such as Andy Diggle for new announcements, exclusive prizes and fun & games!

8. Kodansha Comics
When: Friday, 3:00 to 4:00
Where: 1A03

It’s been a big year for both “Attack on Titan” and “Battle Arena” contender Sailor Moon–the publisher of both titles will be on hand to talk about release plans for each.

We’re just getting started! Come to the Kodansha Comics panel to get all the latest information on Sailor Moon and Attack on Titan, as well as to hear our latest announcements, news and maybe even a giveaway or two. Join Kodansha USA’s Kana Koide and Random House’s Dallas Middaugh as they walk you through the best of Kodansha’s manga from yesterday, today and tomorrow!

7. YOE! Books Presents: Fiends, Ghouls & Haunted Horror!

Yoe is an exception comic historian, and it’s likely he’s unearthed some fascinating comics this time out.

Join the award-winning comics historian Craig Yoe for a lively discussion and Q&A session about the pre-code classic comics that gave you night terrors! Joining Craig will be special guests, including one “fiendish” celebrity guest you’ll have to see to believe!

6. The Oni Press RevoluONIze Comics Panel
When: Saturday, 3:00-4:00
Where: 1A03

I just want them to talk about “The Sixth Gun” all day. But barring that, Oni has some other great titles worth finding out about here as well.

Join John Schork (Director of Publicity, Oni Press) and James Lucas Jones (Editor in Chief, Oni Press) as they talk with a roster of Oni Press’ top creators about their upcoming plans, conspire to make some thrilling announcements and give away free Oni Press comics! This panel is guaranteed by Oni Press’ totally biased employees to be “the most fun you’ve ever had at a panel.”

5. We Are Boom!
When: Saturday, 11:00 to 12:00 PM

Since Archaia and Boom! merged, we’ve been wondering what the two companies have planned. Besides getting some of their respective books turned to movies, hopefully more handsomely-produced hardcovers and off the beaten path titles.

You will not want to miss this jam-packed, inspiring hour as BOOM! 4. Avatar Press Uncut!

This creator-heavy panel should be nice for some insight into the “Crossed” publisher’s upcoming slate of titles.
