Hogwarts House Pride: A Spotlight on Gryffindor

Get your lion head hats out – it’s time for Gryffindor to shine in the PottermoreHarry Potter” House Pride spotlight!

Gryffindors are by far the most prominent house in the books; after all, most of the main characters were in Gryffindor. For that reason, many children wanted to be Gryffindors as they read the books – they dreamed of being placed in the same house as Harry, Ron and Hermione, and they dreamed of giving the password to the fat lady in the painting, and they dreamed of Sir Nearly Headless Nick floating above their table as they ate. I will confess I was one of those, until I realized the Slytherin house was by far the one more compatible with my goals in life… which is a very, very Slytherin sentence. However, that wasn’t the case for a great number of Potterheads who are now very far from their childhood days. A great number of people still identify as a Lion; except, of course, that now they have much better reasons for wanting to be in that house. Gryffindors are dedicated to bravery, to honor, to chivalry and to protecting those who are weaker. The house of red and gold is a house of fighters, a house of knights, a house of those who won’t shy away from a battle (or unpleasant things in general).

To find out why people are proud of being Gryffindors, we took to Twitter. Why do Gryffindors love their house? Why do they identify as a Gryffindor? Do they look good in red?  All of these burning questions were asked, and we got the answers to some of them.

“I feel like I always try to do things for the wellbeing of others, especially those closest to me. I’m very proud of my house because they always do what is right, even if that means going against the grain of the world,” said one proud lion, @epicashleyftw. “Regardless of what people think, Gryffindors will still be true to who they are.” When asked if bravery was the most important trait, she replied, “We’re all different. Everyone’s heart doesn’t beat the same. However, I can see the common root between us – being brave. Being brave to stand up for what’s right, being brave for sticking to who you are, being brave to be there for those around you, etc. So, maybe in the end, bravery is important, but the meaning behind that word is different for each of us.”

“Gryffindors are the innovators, the movers and shakers. We combine all the best qualities from each house. Our courage gives us ambition, and curiosity, and our loyalty and nobility give us kindness,” pointed out another Gryffindor, @at42wallabyway. “A Gryffindor’s bravery doesn’t come from complete self-assurance. I know mine doesn’t. It comes from a belief that their actions are right and good, and that we’ll have those we love backing us up the whole way,” she told us, before adding, “I love being a lioness!”

Another very proud Gryffindor, @CourtneyPerdue1, simply told us that it is best to be a Gryffindor “because we test well and twerk well!” I guess that answers which house Miley Cyrus is in, right?

Gryffindor, the house of Harry, Ron and Hermione. The house of Albus Dumbledore, Minerva McGonagall, Remus Lupin… the list of the brave people who had been sorted into the house of the lions is long. Gryffindors are proud of being the first ones to stand up and fight; Gryffindors are proud of brave deeds and accomplishments. Sometimes, they surprise others; other times they surprise even themselves. I mean… Neville Longbottom, come on. He was joked about the whole series, and turned into a boss in the last book. People were surprised, except… Neville’s always been a boss. Think about it. He was terrified of Professor Snape to the point where Snape was his boggart, his worst fear. And yet, day in and day out, he came to potions class and did his best, no excuses. He’s been a brave guy all along, and no one noticed – perhaps not even he did.

I bet he would have done Voldy in, in like… five books. Dammit, Harry.
