Battle Arena Otaku Fight! Fight!: Voltron vs. Sora ('Kingdom Hearts')

Welcome to round three of 2013's Battle Arena Otaku Fight! Fight!. We're down to the last eight competitors in MTV Geek's annual brawl between the biggest and best in characters from anime, manga, and Japanese pop culture characters. Not only will we get a chance to spotlight some of most interesting, most intriguing, or simply odd characters from 2013, but it's also a chance to you to have your voice heard. You know the drill: we'll present the matchup, and you the reader will get to choose which character comes out on top. So which mech, heroine (or hero), monster, or mascot will come out on top this year?

Can the combined might of five lions defeat the combined strength of Disney and Square characters? Or has the defender of the universe finally met his match against the Keyblade master?

Both Sora and Voltron are experiencing something of a renaissance this year--the former with the announcement of a new "Kingdom Hearts" for the PS3, finally bringing the franchise to the current generation (right on the cusp of the next generation, we might add), while Voltron has joined the mind-blowing crossover with "Robotech" that none of us ever knew we wanted (but totally do).

The question is, which one of these beloved heroes (can a mech be a hero--we'll leave that for the philosophers to decide) ascend to the next level of the arena? Certainly, Sora's got the benefit of not one franchise, but tons of Square Enix franchises behind him--how can you not think of him and immediately conjure up Mickey, Sepiroth, or Neku? However, Voltron has an undeniable purity: those five lions have been part of the anime landscape for so long in such a clear and focused way that you can explain them to anyone and get a new fan hooked.

Will the elegant simplicity of Voltron beat out the complicated mythology of Disney x Square? Or is Sora just the challenger to take down the defender of the universe?
