The Internet's collective reaction to the announcement that Ben Affleck would be the new Batman in Zack Snyder's "Man of Steel" followup was met with the kind of contemplative, wait-and-see attitude we've all come to know and love from around the web.
Of course, what I really mean is that people lost their collective junk, as though "Gigli" had just come out last year and the actor hadn't distinguished himself with excellent work in front of and behind the camera since he was on the front of the tabloids. But not every reaction in the meme-worthy "Batfleck" blowup was immediately depressing. Some were actually pretty funny and clever.
After the jump, check out a few choice picks.
First up, Patton Oswalt offers a suggested line reading for Ben's first day in Gotham:
"I'm not weah-ring hockey pants! Oh wait, I am. I so hammah-ed." You might have to pay me for that one, @BenAffleck— Patton Oswalt (@pattonoswalt) August 23, 2013
While longtime Affleck friend Kevin Smith shares his special relationship with the new Caped Crusader:
Holy shit... BEN AFFLECK IS THE NEW BATMAN!!! http://t.co/acivqxFl0U Do you know what this means? It means that I've seen Batman naked!!!— KevinSmith (@ThatKevinSmith) August 23, 2013
"100 Bullets" creator and "Joker" writer Brian Azzarello still thinks there was a missed casting opportunity here:
Meanwhile, "Batman: Year Zero" writer Scott Snyder discovers he's a little late to the party:
I wake up from my kid's room to find my feed is now full of people tweeting batman lines in boston accents at me. #whatdimiss?— Scott Snyder (@Ssnyder1835) August 23, 2013
@iMackyy ...I'm up for anyone I didn't see coming. And Affleck is a very smart, talented guy with good intentions - so I'm honestly game.— Scott Snyder (@Ssnyder1835) August 23, 2013
While "Starman" writer James Robinson shares the love as well:
So Ben Affleck is Batman? Not sure who else feels this way but I'm calling it -- he will be great. Absolutely certain.— JamesDRobinson (@JamesDRobinson) August 23, 2013
While artist Greg Capullo... well, he might have misheard who was cast:
He's gonna play Batman?! Seriously? pic.twitter.com/xHVHVXsur7— Greg Capullo (@GregCapullo) August 23, 2013
"Superior Spider-Man" writer Dan Slott imagines an even more Internet-breaking announcement:
Want to mess with a Marvel fan's head right now? Tell 'em Ben Affleck is gonna be the voice for Rocket Raccoon.— Dan Slott (@DanSlott) August 23, 2013
While "Savage Dragon" creator and Image co-founder Erik Larsen tries to put it all into perspective:
Mr. Mom played Batman. Think about that. Ben Affleck is certainly a less controversial choice than Michael Keaton. Sheesh.— Erik Larsen (@ErikJLarsen) August 23, 2013
Comedian and former G4 host Chris Gore gets in on the act with a visualization of the conflict in the 2015 film:
For the Internet haters out there, artist Cully Hammer ("Blue Beetle") offered some of the more excitable fans a sage piece of wisdom:
Finally, we'll let Clark Kent get in the last word:
who will ben affleck fight in the new batman movie the riddler or the harvard grad student who doesn't tip— Clark Kent (@CK1Blogs) August 23, 2013
