“They took my leaves…”
Shel Silverstein’s “The Giving Tree” — depending on how you look at it — is either of the most depressing reads in all of children’s literature, or a sweet tale of selfless love and companionship. In the story, a little boy takes all that his tree friend provides for him until there’s nothing left but a stump. But what if the tree wasn’t selflessly giving? What if the boy was selfishly taking? Would the tree be angry? Would the tree want…revenge?
“And the tree was happy.”
