Welcome to 2013's Battle Arena Otaku Fight! Fight!, MTV Geek's annual brawl between the biggest and best in characters from anime, manga, and Japanese pop culture characters. Not only will we get a chance to spotlight some of most interesting, most intriguing, or simply odd characters from 2013, but it's also a chance to you to have your voice heard. You know the drill: we'll present the matchup, and you the reader will get to choose which character comes out on top. So which mech, heroine (or hero), monster, or mascot will come out on top this year?
Can a Death Scythe wielder really hold enough power to defeat one of the most iconic (and ever-changing) video game characters in the medium's history?
What is it about Maka Albarn that's captured so many fans' imaginations? The pigtailed heroine of "Soul Eater" (and exemplary student at the Death Weapon Meister Academy) is fearless, bold, clever, and incredibly tough, effectively rising to the top of the DWMA ranks without the help of either her famous weapon father or absentee mom, even helping head off a war between the Meisters and villainous witches. Between the "Soul Eater" manga and anime, with her twirling scythe, Maka has carved out a niche for herself as one of the baddest heroines in contemporary action fiction.
Then there's Link: it's seldom that any two of versions of this defender of Hyrule are the same and yet, with his green cap and tunic, you know this storied adventurer. Sure, he's had a rough go of it when it comes to his animated adventures, but when it comes to the games, in his 25 year-plus history, Link has been an essential part of the action-adventure landscape, our journeys with him inviting us to paint in the details in the sprawling, possibly connected fiction of each game bearing the title "The Legend of Zelda."
Can this legend defeat a beloved new heroine? Or will he be cut down at the very start of his first trip to the Arena?
Polls close Sunday, August 18 at 11:59pm EDT!
