Welcome to 2013’s Battle Arena Otaku Fight! Fight!, MTV Geek’s annual brawl between the biggest and best in characters from anime, manga, and Japanese pop culture characters. Not only will we get a chance to spotlight some of most interesting, most intriguing, or simply odd characters from 2013, but it’s also a chance to you to have your voice heard. You know the drill: we’ll present the matchup, and you the reader will get to choose which character comes out on top. So which mech, heroine (or hero), monster, or mascot will come out on top this year?
It’s Keanu Reeves’ foray into a piece of classic Japanese fiction vs. a boy dragon slayer. Can a lowly ronin truly overcome the might of a kid who slays dragons?
It’s really too early to tell how Kai will fare in the popular consciousness–the new character played by “The Matrix” star Reeves hasn’t been seen by wide audiences yet, but we do know he’ll be catching trouble from some supernatural menaces in this winter’s big screen fantasy retelling of “The 47 Ronin.” In the film, Reeves plays Kai, a mixed-race young man released from imprisonment to help 46 other wandering samurai avenge the death of their master.
And then we take the jump from the new to the familiar, with Natsu, who fared quite well in last year’s Arena, making his 2013 return to see if the second time’s the charm. He might not be the smartest character in the “Fairy Tail” universe, but with his ability to breathe and withstand fire, he’s certainly one of the most formidable. This hero from the award-winning anime and bestselling manga is certainly popular–but can he defeat Reeves’ star power?
So which will it be? Reeve’s new character created for an old story or the boy with the powers of a dragon?
Polls close Sunday, August 18 at 11:59pm EDT!
