Welcome to 2013's Battle Arena Otaku Fight! Fight!, MTV Geek's annual brawl between the biggest and best in characters from anime, manga, and Japanese pop culture characters. Not only will we get a chance to spotlight some of most interesting, most intriguing, or simply odd characters from 2013, but it's also a chance to you to have your voice heard. You know the drill: we'll present the matchup, and you the reader will get to choose which character comes out on top. So which mech, heroine (or hero), monster, or mascot will come out on top this year?
The beloved Blue Bomber (who just celebrated his 25th last year) vs. the West's latest (and possibly most successful) foray into the mech vs. kaiju genre in this matchup that pits a tiny bot with a heart of gold vs. Earth's last defense against an interdimensional threat.
The distinctive design of "Pacific Rim" mech Gipsy Danger will likely keep the once-decommissioned monster fighter in the popular consciousness for a while. But it's the stew of inspirations behind her--everything from "Evangelion" to the Japanese SDF in Toho's "Godzilla" films--which has likely made this mech such a global phenomenon. "Pacific Rim" director and co-writer Guillermo del Toro made the battered but still deadly Gipsy a fully-formed thing in a movie full of paper-thin characters and full-blown action, and we're hoping the director will return to this universe and find an excuse for his heroes to hop inside their mech to defend the Earth again.
By contrast, we all seem to love Mega Man in spite of few and far between new games featuring Capcom's little blue robot. Sure, the publisher has announced numerous re-releases and even supported a fan-made crossover with their other gigantic franchise, but "Mega Man Legends 3" or a proper, non-RPG side-scrolling "Mega Man" game is nowhere in sight. That's why it's up to you, the fans, to show your support to Rock/Mega man as he enters the arena.
So which of these two mechanical contenders is your favorite? Will it be the little robot fighter that could or the giant mech that totally did?
Polls close Sunday, August 18 at 11:59pm EDT!
