During's MTV's San Diego Comic-Con livestream, Jim Lee just reveal that the Superman vs Batman film will be based on "Dark Knight Returns"?

He said:

'Dark Knight Returns' is my favorite [comics], it's what inspired me to get into comics. It has an amazing battle between Superman and Batman...just to finally see it come to life after all these years, it's gonna be awesome.

As you can see in the video, Lee steps back from his comments, but it certainly brings up an interesting point, can't the scene be in the movie, even if it's not a straight adaptation?

When DC announced that Batman would appear in the "Man of Steel" sequel by having actor Harry Lennix read the following speech from Frank Miller's legendary graphic novel, "Dark Knight Returns," the frothing fan frenzy popped to 11 at the thought that we might see a crazy-pants Bruce Wayne take on a much-too-good big blue boy scout on the big screen:

"I want you to remember, Clark, in all the years to come... In all your private moments. In all the years to come, my hand at your throat. I want you to remember, the one man who beat you."

But does that actually mean "Dark Knight Returns" will provide the basis for "Man of Steel 2"? According to MTV News, Zack Snyder clarified that the sequel would not be an adaptation of Miller's book, but will "inform their story."

So, from the quote, and Jim Lee's above comments, can we deduce that Snyder and co are poised to recreate the Bat-armor-assisted, knock-down-drag-out brawl between Bruce and Clark? It's very possible that the film can "pay tribute" to the scene, in the same way that Bane's backbreaker from "Knightfall" was featured in "Dark Knight Rises."

Nothing is guaranteed of course, and it's so early in the process, but if I was a betting man, I bet "Man of Steel 2" will reference "DKR" at some point.
