SDCC 2013: Meet Bob Stookey, The Newest Lost Soul On ‘The Walking Dead’

Where’s Wallace? That’s not the important question today. The real question is: what about Bob?

We’re not talking about the Bill Murray classic, either. Instead, we’re looking at “The Wire” star Lawrence Gillard Jr., who has a brand-new role on a major TV series in the form of “The Walking Dead.” Gillard plays former army medic Bob Stookey, a minor character during Robert Kirkman’s Woodbury arc in the comics, and a major player in the “Walking Dead” prose novels written by Kirkman and Jay Bonansinga. Expect a different version of Bob when he appears in season four.

“His backstory is not entirely the same as in the comic and the novel,” new showrunner Scott M. Gimple tells Entertainment Weekly. “I think he’s seen things go bad over and over, and winding up in this stable place doesn’t shake him from his experience. He struggles with that.”

At the end of season three, Rick Grimes and his companions liberated the people of Woodbury and brought them into their home at the prison. Bob is part of the Woodbury crowd in the comics and the prose novels, but not on the show. According to the EW article, Bob “is found by Daryl Dixon about a week before events pick up in season 4.” Sounds like he’ll have a strong story connection to our favorite “Walking Dead” Instragammer.

“You can see there’s something deeper and darker that’s going on with this character, just from the first episode,” Gillard describes of his character. “We don’t really know what it is. We just know he’s got some issues that he’s dealing with.”
