Like a Sarlacc’s groping tentacle seeking to pull all things within reach into it’s gaping maw, San Diego Comic-Con has begun to devour the weekdays surrounding its official Thursday kick-off. So it went with the “Star Wars” Course of the Force party at Hard Rock Hotel’s rooftop Float bar last night.
The party was held as a closing ceremony for the charity lightsaber relay race that began July 9 at Skywalker Ranch and continued from San Francisco to San Diego. Organized through Chris Hardwick’s Nerdist Industries, Lucasfilm and sports marketing group Octagon, the lightsaber “torch” was passed from runner to runner to raise funds for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
And celebrity hosts Hardwick, Ashley Eckstein, Alison Haislip, Carrie Keagan and Alex Albrecht, along with cosplayers, journalists and relay-runner Wilmer Valderrama – decked out in a Boba Fett bathrobe – gathered to bring the lightsaber home to Comic-Con and party down to the nerdy tunes of R2-D2 and The Spazmatics.
So here’s a rundown of the party highlights:
Who I saw: Aside from the celebs mentioned above, I got to hang with Chewbacca – sort of. Next to a cool Mos Eisley cantina set was a big ol’ hairy wookie sitting at a bar table, and brave patrons could join Chewie for a photo or a conversation about whether “fuzzball” is a epithet.
What I ate/drank: The mini buffalo chicken sliders were pretty killer. Sadly there were no “Star Wars” themed drinks, so I took to order Skyy(walker) vodka.
Overheard at the party: While chatting about her “The Walking Dead” apparel showcased at the con, Her Universe nerd-fashion maven Ashley Eckstein revealed that “Doctor Who” fans have some new designs on the way. Want a hint? Women will be able to EXTERMINATE! their extra closet space very soon.
Best photo op: Dancing sand people cutting a rug. Forget Tusken Raiders; these were Tusken ravers.
