‘Game of Thrones’ Fans, Heal Your Red Wedding Agony With Kazoos!

by Josh Wigler

How does one get past the Red Wedding? The short answer: you don’t. The grisly murders of [SPOILER], [SPOILER], [SPOILER] and virtually the entire [SPOILER] army at the hands of the treacherous [SPOILER] remains one of the most powerful, disturbing and, yes, SPOILER-filled moments in television history, let alone this year.

But if you’re willing to open your heart to the power of the kazoo, you might find some peace after all.

One enterprising “Game of Thrones” fan has depowered the haunting anthem of House Lannister using a surprisingly effective weapon: the kazoo. Tumblr user the-vashta-nerada took aim at “The Rains of Castamere,” the Lannister song played just before (okay final SPOILER warning, get away now if you somehow still haven’t seen the penultimate episode of “Thrones” season three) Walder Frey and his men betrayed and killed the King in the North, his mother, wife, unborn child, direwolf, and bannermen. (Wow, just typing that out makes me furious all over again.)

The “Castamere” cover is done entirely with kazoos replacing, well, everything. The violins, the cellos, even the harrowing lyrics that normally read:

And who are you, the proud lord said,
that I must bow so low?
Only a cat of a different coat,
that’s all the truth I know.
In a coat of gold or a coat of red,
a lion still has claws,
And mine are long and sharp, my lord,
as long and sharp as yours.
And so he spoke, and so he spoke,
that lord of Castamere,
But now the rains weep o’er his hall,
with no one there to hear.
Yes now the rains weep o’er his hall,
and not a soul to hear.

Is it enough to make us forgive George R.R. Martin for killing some of his best characters in one fell swoop? Perhaps not. But it is enough to put kazoos in your brain for the rest of the day, and that’s as good a way to start the work week as any.

Give the “Rains of Castamere” kazoo cover a listen over here.
