Is Bond’s Rory Kinnear The Next ‘Doctor Who’?

The Telegraph is reporting that “Quantum of Solace” and “Skyfall” actor Rory Kinnear has been offered the role of the next Doctor when Matt Smith steps down at the end of the season. is this just rumor and speculation, or are we closer to hearing about the next Doctor than we think?

Just a week after announcing Matt Smith’s departure from the show, could Kinnear be ready to sign on as the 12th Doctor? According to The Telegraph’s source, “He has been offered the part and we are waiting to hear if he will accept.” Kinnear, 35, is a veteran of stage and screen, but would he be willing to jump into the commitment of a full-time gig on one of the BBC’s biggest shows?

He’s been linked to the role before, responding to reports that he’d been offered the role as false, but that doesn’t mean it’s not the case now.

Kinnear would certainly make a very different choice from the last three Doctors: Eccleston was an urban buttkicker while Tennant and Smith both brought a kind of dark mania to the character. Nothing I’ve seen of the actor’s work so far would seem to indicate that he has the temperament for that kind of performance. But then again, the point of regeneration is that we get a new Doctor with a new spin on the character, right?

After three successful seasons, Smith’s departure came as a surprise to most fans. Smith still has the 50th Anniversary special coming up on November 23. Prior to today’s rumor, the BBC planned to unveil the next Doctor during this year’s Christmas special.
