We bring you a lot of Kickstarter recommendations around here, but this is the first I might have made based not simply on the title of the piece, but a joke about another film's title entirely.
5secondfilms, the makers of ultra-brief comedy shorts, are trying their hand at a full-length feature based on their 2009 homage to slashers of the 80's, "Dude Bro Party Massacre 3." And it was the flash of the "Zombi 8" title that earned a little chuckle from me, a nice little wink to the labyrinthine and bizarre pseudo sequlization of "Dawn of the Dead" in Italy during the 70's and through the 80's. It's that kind of knowing nod to VHS-era horror that makes me think the 5secondfilms team might have something clever (or at least moderately fun) on their hands.
The deliberately low-fi feature (which is seeking $200,000 for their production budget) would feature the male members of the comedy troupe as shirtless bros being stalked and killed by the killer Motherface.
Now, young, sweaty dudes being the subject of horror isn't a new thing: David DeCocteau's string of bro-witch movies in his "The Brotherhood" series, but if it's not clear, 5secondfilms is taking a more reverse exploitation stance, poking fun at the likes of "Slumber Party Massacre" (which was itself a critique of the then-rampant sexy girls in skimpy clothes getting killed aspect of the slasher genre). The film will also feature a spliced-in Filipino softcore subplot and the whole thing is framed as though it was recorded off of late-night TV on a midwestern TV station, complete with period-appropriate ads.
If "Dude Bro Party Massacre 3" can draw together some of those influences and keep up the pace (or at least the mania) of its 5-second trailer, I'm down to check it out.
