Lucasfilm Announces 'Star Wars Rebels' Animated Series

Following the cancellation of "Star Wars: The Clone Wars" and the detouring of Seth Green's "Star Wars: Detours" we've been awaiting the announcement of "Star Wars'" next foray into the wilds of the animated frontier. "Clone Wars" director Dave Filoni teased that new stuff was to come, but now, this morning, we've got confirmation that Lucasfilm's first post-Disney-purchase animated TV series will be "Star Wars Rebels" from Filoni and "X-Men: First Class" writer Simon Kinberg.

According to an official Lucasfilm press release "Rebels" will be set between Episodes III and IV and will focus on the Empire's domination of the universe and the dismantling and eventual rebuilding of the Jedi. I also would bet it's going to involve the Rebel Alliance because of, ya know, the title.

Folks attending Star Wars Celebration Europe in Germany will be the first to get a look at the new series that will involve many of the creatives who worked on "Star Wars: The Clone Wars."

No word yet on which characters will be involved in the story. We know "Clone Wars" hero Anakin is now Darth Vader in that timeline, Obi-Wan is in hiding, and the galaxy is both far, far away and in shambles.

Is it time for Wedge Antilles to have his moment in the sun? His is a rebel after all.

"Star Wars Rebels" will premiere on Disney XD in Fall 2014 as a special one hour event. Is this the end of "Star Wars" relationship with Cartoon Network? Looks like it.
