With the release of “Star Trek Into Darkness” just a few days away, what better way for Trekkies and Trekkers to celebrate than by picking up a “Star Trek” comic book. IDW Publishing has provided fans with their very own collection that explores the rest of the Star Trek Universe. Let’s see what are the Top Ten Star Trek Comics you should be looking out for.
10. “Star Trek: Mirror Images”
In an alternate reality, evil Captain Kirk reigns supreme but his thirst for absolute power is unquenchable. Now, evil Kirk has set his eyes on Captain Pike and the Enterprise. Will he unseat Pike from his throne and takeover the Enterprise?
9. “Star Trek: Burden of Knowledge”
What happens when Captain Kirk, Mr. Spock, and McCoy are kidnapped during their mission? Will the rest of the Enterprise crew be able to rescue them in time? What lengths will Bones go through when his medical ethics are tested?
8. “Star Trek Archives Vol.2: Best of The Borg”
The Borg has always been the deadliest of Captain Jean Luc Picard’s enemies. Even when things were at their worst, Picard never lowered his shields and surrendered his ship to the Borg. Even after being turned into one of them, Picard found out the hard way how to regain his humanity.
7. “Star Trek : Spock Reflections”
How does someone like Spock, a Vulcan, live on Romulus for many years? What kind of person settles there and then decides to leave? Who does Spock turn into when he returns back to Earth?
6. “Star Trek/Legion of Super-Heroes”
Somehow the timeline has suddenly changed for both heroes. The Imperial Planets of Terra have taken over and are hunting down members of the Enterprise crew and the Legion of Superheroes. When both teams finally meet, they have to set things right.
5. “Star Trek: Infestation”
Zombies! That’s right! Kirk, Spock, and McCoy have to fight zombies in space. Set phasers to kill because stunning them won’t put them down!
4. “Star Trek: Nero”
After Khan, my next favorite big bad on my list is Nero. After watching his family die right in front of him, Nero never stops hunting down the man responsible, Spock.
3. “Star Trek Classics: The Gorn Crisis”
Captain Picard is sent in to secure an alliance with The Gorn. But, when there is a civil war brewing within the Gorn, who will Picard choose to help? When neither side trusts each other, who will be the victor in the end?
2. “Star Trek: Leonard McCoy-Frontier Doctor”
Before there was Dr. Gregory House, you had Dr. Leonard McCoy treating patients with weird illnesses. I always wondered how an angry doctor such as McCoy ended up on the Enterprise. “Dammit Jim! I’m a doctor, not a bricklayer!”
1. “Star Trek: Khan Ruling In Hell”
Besides J.J. Abrams’ reboot, my favorite “Star Trek” movie of all-time is “Wrath of Khan.” I definitely want to read about Khan, who single-handedly defeated Kirk and quoted Shakespeare before dying! Say it with me now, “Khaaan!”
“Star Trek” inspired many writers to continue the mission of the Enterprise crew. With tons of stories about Kirk, Spock, Picard, and Worf, there’s definitely something for Trekkies out there. What’s your favorite “Star Trek” comic?
“Star Trek: Into Darkness” is in theaters on May 17, 2013.
