Aniplex Announces A Pricey 'Gurren Lagann' Limited Edition DVD and Blu-ray Release

The Gainax animated series, OAV, and movies are getting another release here in the U.S. from Aniplex but the price might put you off a little.

First off, let's admit that Aniplex has a pretty stacked pack planned for "Gurren Lagann" on Blu-ray, with all 27 episodes of the series, the three theatrical releases and the OAV being released alongside a drama CD, a collection of music videos, select behind-the-scenes videos, 3DCG animation test footage, voice actor interviews, posters, stickers, postcards, and staff interviews (plus a whole lot of other video content).

It's the price that's hard to reconcile, though, coming in at an "okay-licensing-can-be-expensive" $139.98 on DVD and a whopping $549.98 for the Blu-ray release. The Blu-ray release is an import, but for my money, that might be a little too high for what's admittedly a pretty terrific little TV series.

Aniplex hasn't yet revealed when the sets will be available, but should you be so inclined to get one, they're available for preorder starting today.

From the official synopsis:

This is the story of a man who has yet to realize what destiny holds in store for him...

In the distant future, mankind has lived quietly and restlessly underground for hundreds of years, subject to earthquakes and cave-ins. Living in one such village are two young men: one named Simon who is shy and naive, and the other named Kamina who believes in the existence of a "surface" world above their heads. The destiny of these two starts moving drastically when the ceiling of their village falls in, and a gigantic "Gunmen" and a beautiful girl named Yoko, wielding a superconductive rifle, come from the surface. Together, Kamina, Simon, and Yoko ride the mecha "Lagann" that Simon digs out of the ground, and fly up to the surface!
