“Dredd” was always going to be a hard sell to mainstream audiences and the hardcore as well, particularly after the negative associations from the Stallone film–the typical response I’d hear from someone when the Karl Urban-starring movie was mentioned was “They made a sequel to ’Judge Dredd?'” Some of that negative association (and a not exactly forceful marketing effort by Lionsgate) doomed the film to something like $35 million globally on a $50 million budget.
So we’re probably not going to see Urban donning the helmet in any official capacity anytime soon (besides, he has the Necroverse to think about). According to Shankar:
It’s because the movie totally bombed & R-rated movies are a tough sell to begin with.
But I am working on a Dredd short in the vein of #DirtyLaundry … you’re actually the first person to know about this …
If DREDD becomes a cult hit it will be awesome. Last September was a terrible month … DREDD bombed and then LOOPER became a massive hit a week later!
Nothing against LOOPER! I think Rian Johnson is a genius and I think Joseph Gordon Levitt will become his generation’s Matt Damon. Ram Bergman, the movie’s real producer, is one of the nicest guys in Hollywood.
So we might see the character again in an unbranded fan film a la the Tom Jane “Punisher” short that a lot of people dug for some reason. It’s disappointing, but also kind of cool to see a producer hustling so hard for a property that he seems to really love.
Oh, and “Dredd 3D” is out on DVD and Blu-ray. You should see it.
