This was me Wednesday morning:
Young Avengers Day!! Young Avengers Day!! YOUNG AVENGERS DAAAAAAAAAY!!!!!!!!!
So of course I didn’t actually make it to the comic shop Wednesday. And I hate to wait a whole, extra, long, agonizing day before I could pick up the coolest comic ever and all the other really awesome books that were out this week.
Young Avengers #2 by Kieron Gillen and Jamie McKelvie with Mike Norton
THIS IS THE COOLEST COMIC EVER!!!! No, but really. I just want to flail my arms like Kermit the Frog every time I think about this book. And it’s only on issue #2. It’s just so brilliant and energetic and gorgeous. This issue includes such awesomeness as a recap page that looks like a tumblr dash, a fantastic bit that plays with extra-dimensional locations and the nine-panel grid, and Kid Loki’s obsession with diner food. Seriously though, there’s just the perfect amount of silly breaking the fourth wall and complex visual storytelling. There is so much heart and soul poured into Young Avengers and you can see that on each and every page. Also, I read this issue like three times because AWESOMENESS. Go read this comic. Go read it right now. Otherwise I’m not sure we can be friends.
THIS IS THE COOLEST COMIC EV–ok, I know I just said that. But Hawkeye is so freaking cool. It’s like the Ferris Bueller of comic books. It’s just so amazingly cool that you want to hang out with it all the time because life’s just a little bit brighter when with Hawkeye and you secretly hope that just a bit of its coolness rubs off on you. Clint gets tangled up with a classic femme fatale and some crazy Russian mobsters. It’s not the first time it’s happened in this comic. In fact, it’s a wonderfully done callback to issue #3, which is pretty much when I fell in love with the book. There’s also a great riff on old romance comics alongside some more grown-up dark and twisty relationship stuff. Seriously, this team just knocks it out of the park every single time.
Ok, I know that technically this is not a comic (even though there are “Avatar” comics) and I know that I’m about 5 years late to the party. But. I cannot stop watching this show!! My apartment is a complete disaster because the minute I get home after work every day, I pop on Netflix and watch this show until I fall asleep on the couch. The last time I devoured a show like this was “Supernatural”. I mean, this is like the best cartoon ever. The character development and complex storytelling is so compelling and masterful. And the gorgeous animation just keeps me absolutely enthralled. I can’t get enough of this show. I’m very happy I’ll have “Korra” to dive into as soon as I’m finished. Now, if you’ll excuse me, Ang and Zuko are trying to learn fire-bending from dragons and I need to see how this goes.
This week’s Comics Moment of Zen: “Bacon really is magic.”
See you next week!
