Hasbro Planning New 'Jurassic Park' Toy Line

By Zack Smith

Almost twenty years ago, Jurassic Park arrived in theaters, and ushered in a new age of cutting-edge CGI (and less-than-cutting-edge in films that weren’t as good), along with that sweet line of Kenner figures with scary sculpts, creepy pop-out flesh “wounds” and less-interesting human figures that didn’t look anything like Sam Neill or Jeff Goldblum.

Now with plans for Jurassic Park 4 under way, it’s time for new toys – and Hasbro will be bringing them to us.

Hasbro, which merged with Kenner’s product lines in 2001, has the original toys as a major part of its history, and thanks to this new deal with Universal, they now have the rights to develop a action figures, plush, dolls, playsets, vehicles, role play, games, KRE-O branded building sets and much more.

Plans for Jurassic Park 4 are still early -- there’s no director yet, and longtime producer Kathleen Kennedy just left the project to work on the new Star Wars films. Most interesting is that Rise of the Planet of the Apes screenwriters Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver have been tapped to script this – they did a great job of restoring a sense of wonder and character to that franchise. Can they do the same for the velociraptors and friends?

I do wish they’d gone with the abandoned human-dinosaur hybrids, as seen in this concept art. That would have made for some killer figures.

The new toys won’t be out until 2014, but until then, here’s Weird Al to comfort you.

How about it? Did you have Jurassic Park toys when you were younger, and are you looking forward to some new ones for, um, your kids, wink wink, nudge nudge? Let us know!
