This 'Man of Steel' Parody Makes Me Wonder: Whatever Happened To The Mouse Of Steel?

That powerful super-rodent Mighty Mouse apes Henry Cavill in this parody by artist Bobby Timony of "Man of Steel" ...which makes me wonder, "what ever happened to the Mouse of Steel?

Mighty Mouse made his first cartoon appearance in 1942, originally known by the original name of "Super Mouse." Presumably, DC Comics lawyers were not pleased. In the decades that followed, Mighty Mouse would appear in scores of animated shorts, as well as three TV series.

The last time I saw the big MM, he was revamped by animation legend Ralph Bakshi in the mid-Eighties for the irreverent cartoon Saturday Morning cartoon "Mighty Mouse: The New Adventures." Bakshi's take on Mighty Mouse retained all the iconic qualities of the character while bringing the writing and art into the current age -- and it's not too much of an exaggeration to say that the show paved the way for the "modern" era of TV animation, making it possible for series like "Ren and Stimpy" and "Tiny Toons" to be brought to air.

"Mighty Mouse: The New Adventures" was hastily brought to a close after a scene allegedly featured MM sniffing cocaine (it was actually a flower on his lapel). Mighty Mouse couldn't seem to catch a break, as his big comeback in 2001, in a "power of cheese" commerical, depicted him bissfully eating a cheese sandwich in a restataurant while a mass disaster happened to the cityscape outside; in the wake of 9/11, the ad was scrapped.

But where is Mighty Mouse now, especially since we are on the verge of a new Superman movie? Well, in 2004 there was talk that a CGI Mighty Mouse movie was set to be released from Nickelodeon Movies in 2013, and IMDB has it listed "in development." While the rodent was the subject of a Marvel Comics miniseries in the early 1990s (featuring a "Crisis on Infinite Earths" parody), there are no Mighty Mouse comic books currently being made to capitalize on the "Man of Steel" boom.

Well, at least he has underwear!
