Doctor Octopus To Become New Spider-Man

You've followed his adventures for 50 years, but now it's time to say goodbye to an icon.

USA Today broke the heartbreaking news this morning: Peter Parker, better known to millions as Spider-Man, will no longer be in that role.

It all happens in the historic 700th issue of "Amazing Spider-Man"—in stores now!— as Parker makes his last stand, in a final fight with his arch-enemy Doctor Octopus.

Not to worry, Spider-Fans—you can dry your eyes knowing that the adventures of your favorite webslinger will still go on in the pages of "Superior Spider-Man," launching January 9th with the powerhouse team of Slott and artist Ryan Stegman. Only it won't be Peter Parker slinging webs—but Doctor Octopus himself!

The change in the man behind the spider-suit reflects the darker tone of the new book, editor Stephen Wacker told USA Today: "We want to do Spider-Man by way of Batman — a little creepier and darker."

We'll miss you, Peter Parker!
