What is the deal with that big body that we see on the aircraft carrier? del Toro says:
It’s the carcass of a Kaiju. But the Kaiju have a toxic effect called ’Kaiju Glow,’ which is when they fall, the blood is toxic, acidic, so we wanted an image that showed the size of the Kaiju.
About the geological fault we see in the bottom of the ocean (which is so great by the way), del Toro says that we’ll see an inter-dimensional portal above it in the film and guess what? We freakin’ go through it to the other side into Kaiju-ville! Jazzed level just leveled up!
The attack we see in the trailer on the poor, repeatedly cinematically battered Golden Gate Bridge is the first we see in the movie.
I wanted very much to show the scale. The whole movie is about scale. Literally, there are set pieces that are impossibly big. I wanted very much to have this image to show you what the tip of a nail of a Kaiju looks like.
The most facsinating part of GdtT’s chat with Horowitz is the attention to detail he seemed to have paid in creating the world of “Pacific Rim.” He’s always been a successful world-builder in movies like “Pan’s Labyrinth” and “Hellboy 2,” but the sheer scale of this environment, and the rules he’s written is taking the man’s creativity up like ten thousand notches.
